Montevideo Treaty 1980 established that the Counter Parties should continue the integration process, which aims at promoting a harmonic and balanced socio-economic development in the region, creating an agile and flexible sphere of action that should allow to sign different kinds of agreements, as well as to establish cooperation in multiple areas.

The General Secretariat collects and organizes socio-economic data from different sources in order to provide socio-economic information, as well as to contribute to the objective interpretation of socio-economic evolution of the countries of the region. Variables are organized according to their content, in order to allow international comparison of results, help the development of the activities of the Association and satisfy the needs of users.
